Before a coastal drive, plan for heat, luggage and sand.
The best vehicle choice is the one that fits the road conditions you will actually encounter—not the most adventurous-looking option.
Use the route you have
Check whether your route stays on surfaced roads, includes a beach access road, or heads into loose sand. Do not assume a hired vehicle is permitted off road simply because it has all-wheel or four-wheel drive.
Pack around the car
Count people, bags, coolers and child seats before choosing. Look closely at boot volume, seating layout and air-conditioning features so the drive is comfortable for everyone, not only the driver.
Ask before you leave the tarmac
Vehicle rules, insurance terms and recovery availability matter more in remote locations. Use the booking conversation to agree on permitted routes, handover timing and emergency contacts before the keys change hands.
